WHAT HAPPENED?
De Gea spent the entirety of last season unattached, which must have been an unusual experience for a player still only 33 years old and with more than 700 appearances for club and country to his name. But it would appear that the Spaniard's long wait to find a new home is over; he posted a cryptic message on X on Saturday afternoon that appears to suggest a deal has been agreed.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
De Gea's absence in 2023-24 was quite a shock considering the Spanish goalkeeper's obvious talent and the fact that he made 58 appearances for United the season prior. Sure, top managers in the modern era prefer ball-playing goalkeepers – which doesn't suit De Gea's strengths – but he won the Premier League Golden Glove award in his final season at Old Trafford.
